3.10 OVERVIEW

3.10	The student will recognize the importance of why government is necessary in the classroom, school, and community, Virginia, and the United States of America by
	a)	explaining the purpose of rules and laws;
	b)	explaining that the basic purposes of government are to make laws, carry out laws, and decide if laws have been broken;
	c)	explaining that government protects the rights and property of individuals.

NOTE: The Virginia Board of Education adopted the revised 2008 History and Social Science Standards of Learning at the January 10, 2008, meeting. Full implementation of these documents is scheduled for the 2010-2011 school year, as outlined in Superintendent’s Memorandum Informational Number 49.
